The Fish Report (9th Febuary 2010)
Writing the article for our website presents somewhat of a challenge. You take a look at what has happened over the last month and look at what happened in the following month historically, then try to make a guesstimate of what is going to actually happen next month. Last year we had heaps of bait around and were disappointed with the number of gamefish. The weather gave us a bashing too. It looks like we may be at the stage when the weather breaks and gives us that promised sea of milk and honey. The prediction is for the warm water to push in against the shore bringing calm, clear conditions.
The fish should play along too and there have been some great Samsonfish, Mackerel and Cobia landed recently. In spite of the fact that these large predators are about, some of the smaller really tasty fish are also around in numbers. Many divers are reporting seeing Snapper although none have been landed, enough said. There are numbers of Bluebar around which are spectacular table fare. In some areas it is sensible to take a long hard look at any bullseyes around. Pearl Perch seem to really like hanging with these bait schools and if there is a cave in the vicinity look inside. Pearl Perch are sure to be way back inside behind the bullseyes.
It goes without saying that if you encounter bait, look at what the current is doing. Swim into the current and about 100m ahead of the bait. You are almost guaranteed finding the big fish some way ahead of the bait. Don’t be surprised if you stumble into mackerel in shallow water. At the moment a rock-hop would probably be a waste of time but when the sea settles expect them in really close.
